SCHOOL CIVICS PROJECT

The need to create an informed and active citizenry is part of public schools’ missions. Unfortunately, many students lack political understanding and feel powerless to affect any change in their society. This project was conceived through qualitative data collected from students and teachers about their attitudes and beliefs concerning civic engagement. The result was a comprehensive multi-grade project that used partnerships with the surrounding community to engage students into taking personal investments into their communities.

Creating a project of this nature requires that some of the responsibility be shared with the community that a school resides in. By finding city, local, and state partners to work with us, we can involve stakeholders to form reciprocal relationships that benefit both students’ learning and their commitment to improving the communities we live in.
